We’ve spent the last seven nights at the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort as part of our break during the Australian school holidays.
This is our 5th trip to Cairns since Lola was born. Why do we always return to Cairns? Because you are pretty much guaranteed to have warm weather all year round and there are plenty of things to do with kids.
This is our second stay at the Novotel, and we chose to stay here again as Lola loves the pool, activities and location to the esplanade and muddys playground.
Following is our assessment of our stay and the amenities:
There are plenty of options for children to eat. They provide all the basics such as spaghetti bolognese, fish and chips and cheeseburgers. They also have quite a few vegetable and salad options.
The food is of high quality and a reasonable size, so I often find myself finishing off Lola’s meals and still feeling satisfied.
For adults, there is an abundance of delicious, healthy meals, but they are a bit on the expensive side.
The pizzas are yummy, so I find myself always ordering them or a second children’s meal.
They will also deliver your meal to your room, poolside or at the bar.
We have spent several days just hanging by the pool eating, and I’ve enjoyed the occasional cocktail.
At $229 per night, you get what you would expect from a room within this price range.
The beds are comfy, and they provide additional bedding and a range of pillows. There is a full bathroom and mini fridge in each room.
My only complaint about the accommodations is the lack of seating area to eat and outdoor seating.
The seating area has one big cane chair and matching stool that is uncomfortable and not suitable for eating a meal on. When ordering room service we have had to eat on the floor. Lola didn’t mind as we just pretended we were having a picnic.
I would, however, prefer to stay at a place that has a proper patio or balcony. Most rooms don’t have them unless you have a ground floor garden apartment, but at almost $2k for our week here I would prefer not to pay the additional cost.
The pool is definitely the main reason we choose to stay at the Novotel.
It has a man-made beach and is surrounded by plenty of seating and beautiful gardens.
We have spent most of the week here with me being able to relax on a lounge chair while Lola plays in the sand and swims close to the shore.
Since I only like to swim when the water is warm, the setup has been ideal as I’ve been able to relax but also keep my eye on Lola the entire time. The water was freezing this time of year but when we were here in January it was lovely and warm.
There is also a swim up bar on site where you can order drinks as well as food. You can order anything from the hotels menu and have it delivered poolside.
Unfortunatley the Wi-Fi is a little slow. It was OK for everything apart from downloading movies and apps. It just kept dropping out or took too long. We overcame this by going to a local coffee shop when we wanted to update our apps or choose a new movie to watch.
It was fast enough for me to be able to update my websites, use social media and email.
During the school holidays, the hotel has different activities for the kids each day. These range from painting to cooking and water activities. Lola loved the painting and cooking, and especially enjoyed the water fights.
Overall our stay at the Novotel has been pleasant, and we would highly recommend it to other families. If we were to stay here again though, we would choose an apartment that had better eating amenities.
